Scope

2 students completing a master thesis (30 hp)

Background

Green is good. Which is why we at Axis strive to minimize our environmental impact. One part we as mechanical engineers can do is to design for reuse and recycle. The way we decide to use different fastenings for our products can have effects on the products recyclability or the possibility to repair the product. Therefore, we want help to investigate different types of fastenings and their impact on our products in an environmental perspective.

Goal

The purpose of this thesis is to answer for instance the following questions:

- The difference between using an insert and self tapping screw in different materials when it comes to the lifetime of the threaded hole. Perform test on different materials and threads.

- Pros and cons with using inserts vs self tapping screws.

- Can the lifetime of the threaded hole be increased in a more environmentally friendly way than using inserts?

- How are products with inserts being recycled? Is there an easy way to remove the insert?

- Scan the market and see what options there are

- Evaluate how the different choices effect the products life cycle and impact on the environment.
